MANSCo Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship

The MANSCo Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship is a 2–3 to 3-year hybrid training program combining structured on-the-job learning with technical classroom instruction. Apprentices learn to operate a wide range of heavy equipment used in construction, site development, and road work, preparing for high-demand careers across the trades.

What You’ll Learn

Apprentices develop professional competencies through:

On-the-Job Learning (4,000-6,000 Hours) including:

Operating bulldozers, excavators, loaders, graders, water trucks, and more
Site prep, material handling, blueprint reading, safety, and maintenance
Environmental compliance, recordkeeping, and equipment transport

Related Instruction (432 Hours) including:

OSHA safety, PPE use, first aid/CPR
Equipment operation and maintenance
Soil and material science, blueprint reading, and environmental awareness
Math for excavation, load calculations, and job estimating

Who This Is For

This apprenticeship is ideal for:

Individuals 18 years or older seeking to build a career in heavy equipment operation
Veterans
Career changers or high school graduates eager to enter the trades

Minimum Requirements:

Valid driver’s license
High school diploma or GED preferred
Must be physically capable of the work and pass a drug screening

Program Details

Type: Hybrid (Competency & Time-Based)
Length: 2-3 Years (4,000-6000 hours OJL + 432 hours instruction)
Wage Progression:
0–1000 hours: 65% of journey wage
1001–2000 hours: 70%
2001–3000 hours: 75%
3001-4000+hours: 80%
On-the-Job Training Schedule: Full-time (7am-4pm)
Start Dates: Spring and Fall cohorts

Applications are accepted twice per year. All applicants must:

Complete the standard 
application form

Submit required documents 
(ID, proof of education, etc.)

Attend an interview 
session

Is prior experience required?

No. We welcome beginners and train you from the ground up.

Will I get certified?

Yes, you’ll earn a certificate upon completing the apprenticeship and related instruction.

Can I get credit for previous experience?

Yes. Prior related experience may count toward program hours and pay rate.
